Simple machine projects for 3rd graders

Discover Engineering wonders through scientific exploration with engaging tools and hands-on activities! Introduce and explore all 6 simple machines by making amazing discoveries, designing solutions for real-world problems, and conducting investigations. Includes a lever board, wedge, pulley with rope and hook, cart with removable wheels, Archimedes screw, 4 barrel weights, 10 double-sided Activity Cards, and a comprehensive Activity Guide. Largest piece (cart) measures 5″L x 31/2″W. START HOMESCHOOLING Third-graders can understand that a screw is simply an inclined plane wrapped around a center pole by creating their own screw shape. Have them cut long thin triangles of paper. If they've already done a project about the inclined plane, they should be able to explain how the paper could be an inclined plane. Have them wrap the paper around a pencil, then pull the pencil out. The paper will form the shape of a screw. Wheel and axle science project
Have a question?

Oh what simple entertainment it was. And they learned about a simple machine in the process and how a simple machine like a pulley can make things easier to move from one place to another. But they didn’t care if it was easier or not. They thought it was great just doing it! 6. Design a candy-delivery machine Simple machines are used in complex feats of engineering every day.  They make work easier.  What kid doesn’t look for ways to make life easier? (It’s why they shove everything under their bed to clean their room.)  Hello? Lifehack!  Every simple machine is an incredible life hack that changed the way mankind works by giving us a mechanical advantage.  Egyptians built pyramids using the basics of simple machines.  This incredible realization is often lost on kids.  They just want to play.  But we can let them play and learn – all while building a passion for a life-skill and career path.

A great way to use these lessons over multiple grade levels is to assign different simple machines to your students–check out the links ahead of time to see which activities are best for your students’ ages–and have them conduct independent experiments and share their findings with their siblings.
